A 60-day state of emergency is taking place in Ecuador after a convicted gang leader vanished from his prison cell.
Adolfo Macías Villamar, better known as "Fito", is the leader of Los Choneros, a powerful gang which is thought to have been behind some of the deadly prison riots in recent months.
He was being held in the maximum security wing of a jail in Guayaquil.
The emergency measures include the suspension of the right of assembly and a nightly curfew.

Ecuador violence: President calls for neutralisation of criminal gangs
The president of Ecuador has said that the South American country is in a state of war after a series of coordinated attacks by armed groups linked to drug cartels left at least 11 people dead.
There has been looting and kidnappings of police officers in the capital Quito and police have arrested masked gunmen after they stormed a TV station in the largest city Guayaquil.
The attacks have followed the escape from jail of one of Ecuador's most dangerous drug lords.

The United States is condemning escalating violence in Ecuador, after a group of masked men armed with guns and explosives stormed a public television station in the port city of Guayaquil during a live news program and fired shots in the studio.
“We strongly condemn the recent criminal attacks by armed groups in Ecuador against private, public, & government institutions. We are committed to supporting Ecuadorians’ security & prosperity & bolstering cooperation w/partners to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice,” White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said Tuesday on the social media platform X.
